Lily walked aimlessly for a few moments. It was obvious something wasn’t right. She’d taken off running through that dead cornfield, so I knew what it was like when she was on the trail of one of the seals. It wasn’t like this. She looked aimless and uncertain, that creepy death orb floating through the air behind her like a celestial dog.

Raina groaned, and I held back a sigh of relief. We did need her, I’d realized that, and some of my anger toward her had faded.

Another groan, then she rubbed her head and her eyes flew open, her gaze shooting straight to her wrists. “I’m free,” she breathed out in wonder.

“Thanks to Lily.”

She looked in the direction I’d nodded. “What’s that thing behind her?” From the way she narrowed her eyes, I could tell she was having trouble focusing.

“Not sure. Whatever it is basically ate the old guy’s soul.” I pointed to the dead man in the rocking chair.

She flew to her feet—and almost pitched to the floor that same instant. My arm automatically shot out to help stabilize her. “Whoa there, witchy woman. Take it easy.”

“That thing will kill her. We need to get her away from it,” Raina sounded frantic. It was obvious her vision had cleared enough for her to see it properly, and equally obvious that she didn’t like what she saw. She clung to my shoulder for support as she watched Lily and her death pet.

“It seems to think she’s its master. It talks to her. She was speaking to it before it killed the old man, begging it not to take his life.”

“How did it not kill her?” Raina asked, seemingly bewildered.

“She said it should kill the person who was truly blind, or something like that. It was more elegant when she said it.” To be honest, I was reluctant to play the whole thing back in my mind.

Raina leaned against the wall behind her. “It’s an… um…” She cleared her throat. “Mortem Orb.” She whispered the words, as if saying the name out loud would bring death down upon us. “And it is not something to play around with.”

“Believe me, I don’t think Lily is playing with it. She told it she didn’t want to be its master. But it clearly didn’t listen.”

Raina shook her head. “That seer is something else.”
