Lily walked aimlessly for a few moments. It was obvious something wasnât right. Sheâd taken off running through that dead cornfield, so I knew what it was like when she was on the trail of one of the seals. It wasnât like this. She looked aimless and uncertain, that creepy death orb floating through the air behind her like a celestial dog.
Raina groaned, and I held back a sigh of relief. We did need her, Iâd realized that, and some of my anger toward her had faded.
Another groan, then she rubbed her head and her eyes flew open, her gaze shooting straight to her wrists. âIâm free,â she breathed out in wonder.
âThanks to Lily.â
She looked in the direction Iâd nodded. âWhatâs that thing behind her?â From the way she narrowed her eyes, I could tell she was having trouble focusing.
âNot sure. Whatever it is basically ate the old guyâs soul.â I pointed to the dead man in the rocking chair.
She flew to her feetâand almost pitched to the floor that same instant. My arm automatically shot out to help stabilize her. âWhoa there, witchy woman. Take it easy.â
âThat thing will kill her. We need to get her away from it,â Raina sounded frantic. It was obvious her vision had cleared enough for her to see it properly, and equally obvious that she didnât like what she saw. She clung to my shoulder for support as she watched Lily and her death pet.
âIt seems to think sheâs its master. It talks to her. She was speaking to it before it killed the old man, begging it not to take his life.â
âHow did it not kill her?â Raina asked, seemingly bewildered.
âShe said it should kill the person who was truly blind, or something like that. It was more elegant when she said it.â To be honest, I was reluctant to play the whole thing back in my mind.
Raina leaned against the wall behind her. âItâs an⦠umâ¦â She cleared her throat. âMortem Orb.â She whispered the words, as if saying the name out loud would bring death down upon us. âAnd it is not something to play around with.â
âBelieve me, I donât think Lily is playing with it. She told it she didnât want to be its master. But it clearly didnât listen.â
Raina shook her head. âThat seer is something else.â
